The Hidden Cost of Hotel Loyalty Programs (Here is the Math)
Hotel loyalty programs are, first and foremost, a margin defense mechanism for the hotel brand, not a reward mechanism for you. The structure is elegant: give you a reason to ignore the cheaper OTA rate, collect direct bookings (no commission), then pay back a fraction of that saved commission as "points".
The actual point value
- Marriott Bonvoy: ~0.8 cents per point
- Hilton Honors: ~0.5 cents per point
- World of Hyatt: ~1.7 cents per point
- IHG One Rewards: ~0.5 cents per point
Earning roughly 10 points per dollar at Marriott means you are getting back about 8% in points value. If you were booking a rate that was 15% cheaper on a bedbank feed, you just paid 7% more to get 8% back — in a currency that can be devalued overnight.
The devaluation problem
Marriott's off-peak/standard/peak pricing matrix was introduced in 2019 and again quietly increased in 2022. A Category 5 property that was 35,000 points is often 50,000+ today. The points you earn this year might buy 30% less in three years.
When loyalty actually pays
- Elite status benefits (late checkout, upgrades, lounge access) — the real value
- Award nights at aspirational properties in peak season (only when cash rates spike faster than points required)
- Brands with fixed-point award charts (Hyatt) vs dynamic (Marriott/Hilton)
The honest conclusion
Loyalty is valuable for status perks, not for point-per-dollar math. If you are booking for the points, you are usually paying the brand more than they are paying you back. Compare against the real cheapest available rate first — then decide if the perk stack is worth the premium.
